A Trip We Thought Was Fun… Until the Mountains Had Other Plans

What started as a fun long-weekend trip to Kasol with friends slowly turned into one of the most dangerous and unforgettable road journeys we have experienced.

A Trip We Thought Was Fun… Until the Mountains Had Other Plans

A Trip We Thought Was Fun… Until the Mountains Had Other Plans

It was supposed to be simple.

A long weekend. A late-night drive. A plan to escape the city and land in the calm of Kasol.

But mountains… they don’t always follow your plans.

The Beginning – Excitement in the Air

We left home around 10 PM.

Six of us. Backpacks thrown in. Music loud. That classic “trip wali energy” you only feel at the start.

There was just one concern.

It had been raining since evening.

For anyone who has traveled to the hills, especially Himachal Pradesh, you know one thing — rain and mountains are not the best combination.

We hesitated.

“Should we go?”

But then, just like a sign from above, the rain stopped a few hours before departure.

That was enough for us.

Decision made. Trip on.

The First Stop – Comfort Before Chaos

We halted at Amrik Sukhdev for dinner.

Hot food. Laughter. Random jokes.

Everything felt right.

If only we knew what lay ahead.

Night Turns Quiet… Too Quiet

Back on the road, the car slowly grew silent.

One by one, everyone fell asleep.

Just the hum of the engine… and the dark highway ahead.

And then—

Rain.

Again.

At first, soft. Manageable.

We ignored it.

Bad idea? Maybe.

Morning Magic – The Calm Before the Storm

Around 4–5 AM, we crossed into Himachal.

The sky began to lighten.

Mountains slowly appeared, wrapped in mist.

That first glimpse of the hills…

It takes your breath away every single time.

For a moment, everything felt worth it.

Peaceful. Beautiful.

Safe.

And Then… Everything Changed

As we moved closer to Kasol, the rain grew heavier.

Not drizzle.

Not normal rain.

This was the kind that makes you tighten your grip on the seat.

The roads narrowed.

If you’ve been to Kasol, you know—those roads barely forgive mistakes.

Then we saw it.

Water streaming down from the mountains… flowing straight onto the road.

Our excitement quietly turned into fear.

The Moment That Shook Us

A few minutes later—

Traffic jam.

In the middle of nowhere.

We stepped out, trying to understand what happened.

And that’s when we heard it:

“A car is stuck ahead. Water logging.”

That’s it.

No movement. No way forward.

Just rain, mountains, and uncertainty.

The First Big Decision

We looked at each other.

No one said it first—but everyone knew.

We had to get out.

We took a U-turn.

Slowly, carefully, silently.

That drive back from that narrow road… was probably the longest few minutes of the trip.

Plan B – Or Just Survival?

Back on the highway, we called our hotel.

The manager suggested something unexpected—

“Sir, we have another property in Manali. You can go there instead.”

We changed the route.

Started towards Manali.

But the mountains weren’t done with us.

When Fear Becomes Real

The rain didn’t stop.

And then we saw it.

Rocks.

Rolling down from the hills… onto the road.

Not small ones.

Real, heavy rocks.

At that moment, it didn’t feel like a trip anymore.

It felt like a warning.

The Hardest Choice

We stopped the car.

No arguments this time.

Just one clear decision:

“We’re not going ahead.”

Safety over plans.

We searched for hotels nearby.

Nothing.

No network. No options.

Then we remembered—we had seen a few while coming.

Another U-turn.

Some of us weren’t happy.

But deep down, everyone knew—it was the right call.

A Pause in Kullu

We finally stopped at a hotel in Kullu.

And this is where things felt… different.

Our hotel was right in front of the river.

But it wasn’t the calm, postcard-type river you imagine in the mountains.

It was wild.

The water was muddy. Flowing at full speed. Aggressive. Loud.

You could hear it constantly.

It didn’t feel peaceful—it felt powerful.

Almost like nature was still in motion, still unsettled.

We checked in.

And just sat there for a moment.

Quiet.

Processing everything.

Outside—it rained the entire day.

Non-stop.

As if the mountains were reminding us who’s in charge.

The Evening – A Different Kind of Joy

By evening, the rain slowed down.

We stepped out.

Bought small things—jackets, caps, dry fruits.

Clicked a few pictures.

Nothing fancy.

But somehow… it felt special.

Back at the hotel, the staff arranged a bonfire for us.

And just like that—

The fear of the morning melted into warmth.

Food. Fire. Laughter.

Stories we would never forget.

Day 1 – Not What We Planned… But What We Needed

It wasn’t the Kasol trip we imagined.

No riverside cafés. No peaceful walks.

But it gave us something else—

A reminder.

That sometimes, the best trips aren’t about the destination.

They’re about the moments where you choose safety, stick together, and still find joy… even when things don’t go your way.

To be continued…

Because honestly—this trip? It was just getting started.
