A Day to Remember on Kerala's Houseboat

The Houseboat That Returned More Than Memories: A Lost Pair of Goggles, Speedboats, Rain and an Unforgettable Day in Alleppey

After spending the morning learning about Alleppey and Kerala's famous backwaters, it was finally time for the moment we had been waiting for.

The houseboat.

Every picture we had seen before coming to Kerala had somehow led to this moment. The peaceful waters, the traditional wooden boats, the coconut trees reflecting in the backwaters—it all looked exactly the way we had imagined.

Well...

Almost.

Because before our houseboat cruise could even begin, something completely unexpected happened.

Finally... Our Houseboat!

As soon as we reached the boarding point, we quickly located our houseboat.

Seeing it for the first time in real life felt different from seeing it in photographs.

It was much larger than we had imagined.

Beautifully built using traditional Kerala architecture, polished wooden interiors, spacious decks, comfortable bedrooms, and endless water surrounding it from every direction.

We stepped aboard, completed the check-in formalities within a few minutes, and waited for our luggage to be brought from the cab.

Everything was going perfectly.

Until...

The Goggles That Refused To Leave Us

While we were waiting for the luggage, my husband, Siddhant, stepped outside the houseboat to see why it was taking so long.

The next moment...

Thud!

His face accidentally collided with one of the thick ropes tied to the boat.

Before any of us could react, his sunglasses flew straight off his face...

...and disappeared into the backwaters.

For a second, everyone just froze.

He had seen exactly where they had fallen.

Naturally, all four of us immediately leaned over the edge of the boat, staring into the water.

We knew it was almost impossible.

Finding a pair of sunglasses in muddy backwaters?

That sounded like something that only happens in movies.

Still...

We looked.

Sometimes hope makes you do things that logic doesn't support.

Sometimes, Gut Feeling Wins

It was a cloudy afternoon.

The water looked dark.

We had almost accepted that the sunglasses were gone forever.

Then, as if someone had switched on a spotlight...

The sun suddenly came out from behind the clouds.

And at that exact moment...

I noticed something shining beneath the water.

It was only a tiny reflection.

Logically, it could have been anything.

A stone.

A bottle.

A piece of glass.

But for some reason, I immediately said,

"That's the goggles."

I don't know why.

I simply felt it.

Maybe it had become stuck in underwater plants.

Maybe it was resting on the muddy bottom.

Whatever it was...

I couldn't stop believing it was the sunglasses.

A Hero Walks In

We immediately informed the houseboat owner.

Instead of simply saying,

"It's impossible."

He immediately called someone for help.

A few minutes later, a man arrived wearing nothing more than a black lungi.

Honestly...

The entire scene felt straight out of a South Indian action movie.

Without much discussion...

He stepped towards the edge...

Took one deep breath...

And dived straight into the backwaters.

Everyone stood silently watching.

A few seconds felt like several minutes.

Then suddenly...

He came back up.

With something in his hand.

The sunglasses.

We couldn't believe it.

Against all odds...

They had actually been found.

Everyone burst into smiles.

Sometimes luck really decides to surprise you.

Interestingly, these sunglasses have their own story.

They somehow keep finding their way back to us whenever they get lost.

But that's a story for another article.

For now...

Our luggage had arrived.

Our sunglasses had returned.

And our houseboat adventure could finally begin.

Exploring Our Floating Home

After placing our luggage inside our rooms, we finally got some time to explore the houseboat properly.

It wasn't just a boat.

It almost felt like a floating hotel.

There were multiple bedrooms.

A spacious dining area.

A beautiful open deck where everyone preferred sitting.

Large windows offering uninterrupted views of the backwaters.

Every corner looked peaceful.

Naturally...

The camera came out.

Photos.

Videos.

Family pictures.

Couple pictures.

Scenery.

Everything seemed worth capturing.

As if Kerala wanted to welcome us properly, it even rained for a while that afternoon.

Watching rain fall directly onto the calm backwaters from a houseboat is one of those moments that photographs never fully capture.

You simply have to experience it.

Our Cruise Finally Begins

At around 1:30 PM, the crew untied the ropes.

Slowly...

The houseboat left the shore.

No loud engine.

No sudden movement.

It simply glided across the water.

Within minutes, Alleppey's backwaters began unfolding around us.

Small houses.

Children waving from the banks.

Fishing boats.

Palm trees leaning over the water.

Everything moved slowly.

Nobody seemed to be in a hurry.

It almost felt like time itself had slowed down.

Lunch With The Best View

Soon after the boat started moving, lunch was served.

Simple.

Fresh.

Delicious.

Our meal included:

• Rice

• Sambar

• Vegetable curry

• Salad

• Papad

• Pickle

• Freshly prepared fish

Nothing fancy.

Nothing overly complicated.

Just authentic Kerala flavours enjoyed while floating through one of India's most beautiful landscapes.

Honestly...

Good food somehow tastes even better when paired with a beautiful view.

"Would Anyone Like To Try The Speedboat?"

While we were relaxing after lunch, one of the boat staff members came over and casually asked,

"Would anyone like to try the speedboat... or kayaking... or a shikara ride?"

The timing couldn't have been more perfect.

Just a few minutes earlier, my husband and I had been watching speedboats racing across the water.

Both of us had already said,

"That looks so much fun. We should definitely try it."

So when the staff asked...

We didn't even need to think.

The answer was immediately...

Yes!

The only challenge now was convincing my in-laws.

Surprisingly...

That didn't take long either.

Soon all four of us climbed aboard the speedboat.

More Fun Than We Expected

The moment the engine roared...

We realised this wasn't going to be a calm ride.

The speedboat raced through the backwaters.

Sharp turns.

Sudden splashes.

Strong winds.

Water spraying everywhere.

Laughter from every direction.

We kept looking at each other with huge smiles.

Nobody had expected it to be this much fun.

Sometimes the activities you don't think much about become the highlights of the trip.

This was definitely one of them.

Exploring The Local Market

After returning to the houseboat, it wasn't long before the boat was parked near a small local market.

There was also an Ayurvedic spa nearby.

We stepped off the boat and spent some time walking around.

Looking at local shops.

Watching everyday life.

Clicking photographs.

And of course...

No outing is complete without ice cream.

After enjoying our little walk, we returned to the houseboat once again.

A Surprise Sunset Through The Narrow Canals

Just when we thought the day's adventures were over...

The staff came back with another announcement.

"Anyone interested in a shikara ride?"

Almost everyone on the houseboat agreed.

And thankfully...

So did we.

The shikara turned out to be completely different from the speedboat.

No noise.

No splashes.

No excitement.

Just peace.

Unlike the large houseboat, the smaller shikara could travel through narrow canals where bigger boats couldn't enter.

Those hidden waterways showed us a completely different side of Alleppey.

Small homes.

Children playing.

Women washing clothes.

Boats parked outside houses.

Daily life continued exactly as it had for generations.

And then...

The sunset.

Watching the sun slowly disappear behind Kerala's backwaters from a small wooden boat is something we'll probably never forget.

It was one of the most beautiful sunsets we'd ever seen.

Music On The Water

Back on the houseboat, everyone thought the day was finally over.

We decided to rest for a while.

Changed into comfortable clothes.

Relaxed in our rooms.

Then someone knocked on the door.

The staff informed us that there would soon be a live singing programme in the main hall.

How could we miss that?

Even though everyone was tired...

We all gathered there before the performance started.

The singer entertained everyone with popular songs.

Several passengers even joined him on stage.

At one point...

He invited us too.

We politely refused the singing part.

Trust us...

Nobody wanted to hear us sing.

But dancing?

That was much easier.

So instead of singing...

We danced.

Laughed.

Clapped.

And enjoyed every minute.

Sometimes participation matters much more than perfection.

Rain Before Bed

After another delicious dinner, we finally returned to our room.

The day had been long.

Exciting.

And surprisingly eventful.

We were almost ready to sleep.

Then...

We heard it.

Rain.

Once again.

Instead of ignoring it...

We immediately opened the window.

Cool air entered the room.

Raindrops touched our hands.

We recorded videos.

Played with the falling rain.

Watched the ripples forming across the backwaters.

It became the perfect ending to an unforgettable day.

Eventually...

Sleep won.

Because tomorrow promised another full day of exploring Kerala.

And after a day like this...

We couldn't wait to see what was waiting for us next.
